UMS Over the Years: ultra5280

As we get ready to celebrate #25YearsLoud, we’re highlighting some of the people and places that have made a quarter-century of the Underground Music Showcase possible.

Who better to kick off our “UMS Over the Years” series than Robert Castro, founder and editor-in-chief of Denver-based music and lifestyle outlet Ultra5280. Castro has been documenting the UMS for the latter part of 15 years as a photographer and writer, and has witnessed the legacy unfolding firsthand.

Here are the sights, sounds and stories that have stuck with him:

“The Underground Music Showcase, launched in 2000, has played a pivotal role in the inception of our website. Before UMS, I had experience with a previous blog and freelance work for the Denver Post and Westword Magazine. Our first year (2010) immersed us in the vibrant scene, featuring four-day festivals with elements of SXSW, including unofficial backyard parties and late-night sets.

I also have captured UMS artists in a portrait series called UMS Unplugged for a couple of years. The series has consisted of candid band photos in black and white capturing the essence of the South Broadway neighborhood. If there is a grimy alley or sketchy corner of Broadway trust me I've probably captured a photo there.

Our outlet has always provided a platform for local musicians, artists, creatives, writers, and photographers. The Denver music community inspires us to promote this often-overlooked scene. Festivals like UMS allow us to cover various amazing bands over a three-day weekend—every year. A huge thank you to our staff over the years that has had a hand in covering UMS in the past, it would not be remotely possible without you.

Each year, UMS becomes our favorite weekend, providing an opportunity to catch up with the scene and collaborate on future projects. In 2023, we hosted our official day party with a “Selena Tribute” event that was well-received. We look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with the festival as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.”
